Project HeartStarter

Starting Hearts, Saving Lives

Technical Design Lead

09/2019 - Present

HeartStarter is a local tech startup project by Enactus Memorial whose goal is to fight the heart disease epidemic via emergency services and community involvement. Newfoundland and Labrador experience’s the highest rates of cardiac arrest and heart disease as well as the worst patient outcomes of hospitalization in Canada. HeartStarter aims to improve these statistics by targeting rural area emergency services by flying automated external defibrillators via drone in the event of a cardiac arrest. Currently, we have trained over 28 first responders trained to fly our drones in the event of a heart attack.

Initial Ideation and Concept for Drone

Initial Ideation and Concept for Drone

  • Developed and tested an emergency response drone to carry an AED to a patient experiencing cardiac arrest withstanding 50km/hr winds while

    maintaining 70 km/hr speed.

  • Drafted technical documentation for Transport Canada approval to fly the drone beyond line of sight while carrying a payload.

  • Worked with Pulsepoint AED to log AEDs and create a registry through the backend of their app by company partnerships.

  • Organized and bargained insurance coverage of AED and Drone, company legalities, and responsibility in the event of failure.

  • Managed contracts and partnerships with local and global cooperations to accelerate the project timeline and access supply of AEDs.

  • Developed and maintained key relationships with sponsors, government entities, universities, and suppliers for funding, sponsorship, and research.

  • Won TD regional entrepreneurship competition and competed nationally.
